Full of one-off objects, delicious dining and exciting entertainment it is a destination in itself, a place to visit and experience as well as to shop in.
However, being a trader in the road can be a challenge, so when the Albert Road Traders’ Association (ARTA) came to choose a theme for their mosaic and Jenni Catlow came up with “ Snakes and Ladders “ with all its ups and downs. It seemed the ideal way to celebrate running a small business.
The Mosaic panels have been made by over 250 people, traders, residents and pupils from Craneswater and Cottage Grove Junior Schools working with local mosaic artist Anna Potten assisted by Jane Kilford and Sonia Geer
The images represent the sorts of business which operate in Albert Road and where designed by year 5 students from Craneswater school.
All 16 workshops took place in the road itself last year:
in July, working at Tango Tea and
in November; at the Kings Theatre’s “Number 28”.
If you took part in any of these workshops your bit will be there somewhere. You just need to look, but don’t forget, it will be the opposite way round. The mosaic was made in reverse.
The Project was funded by Albert Road Traders Association and part funded by Love Your Street. We would like to thank Portsmouth City Council for their co operation in agreeing to the installation of the mosaic on Albert Road.
The mosaic will last for at least 40 years but in reality we hope that it and Albert Road will last for much, much longer.
